Concussion Education Sessions

All student athletes and their parents or guardians will be required to attend a concussion education session provided by their respective middle and high schools. Attendance at one of these sessions is required before a student will be allowed to try out for any sport. Participation in the concussion education session is mandated by state law (Virginia Code 22.1-271.5). A concussion is a brain injury that is characterized by an onset of impairment of cognitive and/or physical functioning, and is caused by a blow to the head, face, or neck, or to the body that causes a sudden jarring of the head (e.g., a helmet to the head, being knocked to the ground). A concussion can occur with or without loss of consciousness.

Prince William County Public Schools supports the need to ensure that its staff, students, and the community are aware of the seriousness of brain injuries and concussions and how they can affect the student’s abilities in the educational setting. In April 2011, the Prince William County School Board adopted a concussion policy that meets the Virginia Code. The law requires parents and students to sign a form attesting that they received training prior to any level of student participation in athletics.

Sessions will be held on Sept. 7, Nov. 2, Jan. 10, and March 13.  We will begin promptly at 6:30 and please bring a pen.

Tryouts - March 21
2011 Bulldog Baseball

It’s that time of year again! Marsteller Middle School will be holding baseball tryouts beginning March 21, 2011 from 2:50 – 4:50 pm. If we have rainy weather, we will adjust these dates. We will have a mandatory meeting for those interested in trying out for baseball on Monday, March 14 from 2:50- 4:00 pm. (the meeting is to hand in blue emergency cards and PWC Athletic Physical forms and inform kids of what is needed for tryouts.)

Things needed for tryouts:
  1. Warm Clothes. It’s usually very cool the week of tryouts. Please be prepared.
  2. Sweats or baseball pants. Jeans do not give kids enough mobility.
  3. Baseball glove/ Catchers Mitt.
  4. If you have your own catchers gear please bring them. If not, we will provide them.
  5. Baseball bat if you own one. If you don’t we will provide them.
  6. Cleats if you own them. Do not buy cleats until you find out that you’ve made the team.  Sneakers will be okay until after tryouts. (No Spikes)

What we will be looking for:
  1. Fielding ability. Proper technique fielding ground balls and catching fly balls
  2. Throwing ability. Arm strength and accuracy throwing from your position.
  3. Batting. We will look at your swing mechanics, your bat speed, your ability to make good contact. Basically we are looking for hard ground balls and Line Drives.
  4. Pitchers. We will be looking at pitching mechanics, accuracy, and velocity.
  5. Catchers. We will be looking at mechanics, blocking balls, and arm strength throwing out runners.
  6.  Intangibles. Attendance, speed, attitude, coach-ability, and knowing what to do in game situations.

We usually select between 12 and 15 players on our team. If you make the team, expect to practice Monday- Friday until 4:50 each week. You will be expected to be on the field each by 2:50 ready to practice. Missing practices for any reason other than school related will effect playing time. We will send a game schedule home with those who make our team.

All Rides should be at Marsteller by 5pm each day. There is an activity bus that will take kids to certain areas. Activity busses do not drop kids off at their bus stop. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Mike Beyer beyerml@pwcs.edu or Will Hines hinesws@pwcs.edu . Thank you all for your interest.
